Now that you have a general understanding of what antioxidants are and why we need them, the next question is which ones do I need and where do we find the antioxidants that we do need? This is a very relevant question and one that we all need to consider if we want to obtain vibrant health. The bottom line is, that you can’t have too many antioxidants in your diet. They are simply nature's superfood. So a diet that is rich in fresh raw foods will generally be rich in antioxidants. Logically, this takes us to fruits and vegetables, but because each fruit and each vegetable has its own unique set of antioxidants, we need to be sure we eat a wide variety each day. This is why there is so much truth in the idea that you should consume five different vegetables and three different fruit each day (at least 5 is a must!). But remember cooking food destroys a lot of the antioxidant and enzyme value.

The best way of getting around this is to juice your food. It is amazing how delicious a glass of freshly juiced vegetables and fruits can be, even though for most of us, it doesn’t look that appetising. As with so many things in life, results depend on being consistent. So while having an occasional glass of fresh juice is always useful, if you want to make dramatic changes, you need to include it in your daily eating program. There are a number of excellent books that will show you what to do and how to do it and you will be astounded at how quickly you can notice the difference. You might find these on zombie books!

Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn't take antioxidant supplements (I will cover these in a separate post), but what I am saying, is that if you get the foundation right under a building you’re going to be able to build a much stronger and longer lasting result! You see the reason why freshly squeezed vegetables and fruit juices works so powerfully is because you are delivering the power of the antioxidants and enzymes directly to the living cells. The body doesn’t have to spend hours breaking down the food in order to absorb it. To a large extent, the juicing process does this automatically and it releases the enzymes, that are designed to break down the food naturally, into the juice as well.

You notice when you cut an apple that it goes brown. Well this is due to the fact that the apple contains enzymes which start breaking down the cells when the apple is damaged. These enzymes are powerful and actually, all vegetables and fruit have them. So when you juice vegetables and fruits, the enzymes are immediately released and start breaking down the food. That is why it is important to drink these vegetable and fruit juices immediately and not leave them sitting around in the fridge for days. The vitality of the life force of those foods is in the fresh juice, and when you drink it it gets transferred immediately into your body and you can literally feel the difference in minutes.

So if you are suffering from any sort of chronic illness, I would encourage you to investigate the world of juicing. It can produce really amazing results.
