You look at a glass of water and don’t really give it a second thought, yet water is probably the most unique and important substance on this planet. So what exactly is the nature of water? It can exist in three different forms, which in itself, is very unusual for any substance. In its solid state it is ice, while its liquid state is what we call water. But water also exists in a ‘gas’ state. We call this steam or water vapour. All three forms are critical to life. It is interesting that life on this planet could not exist if we didn’t have the polar ice caps, as they control and regulate the flow of the currents in the oceans, and that brings stability to our weather.

Water boils at different temperatures depending on the height you are from sea level. At sea level water boils at 100°C, but if you were up at the top of Mount Everest you could boil the water as much as you like, for the hottest it will get its 40°C. This amazing fact is caused by the weight of the atmosphere. Did you know that water is actually very heavy? If an inch of water was to fall on an acre of ground, it would weigh over 110 tons, and if you think about it, an inch really isn’t that much.

Anyway, back to your body! Every breath you take has water in it. The amount of water depends on the outside temperature and what is called the 'relative humidity' of the air. However, if you are breathing dry air, the air will contain a lot more moisture after it has been in your lungs. It is amazing how much water you lose each day from the body just by breathing. Depending on climate, this can easily be half a litre per day, and much more if you are doing aggressive exercise. So, if you’re going to lose that amount of water from your body, you need to make sure that you replace it. Pure fresh water is not the same as tea, fizzy drinks, coffee, or alcohol. Granted, all these substances contain a lot of water, but they also contain a lot of other things that the body then has to get rid off, and the body uses water to do this. So when somebody says to you to drink a lot of water, they mean drink pure, fresh, clean water. As a guideline you should aim to drink at least 2 litres per day, and more is better.

Remember: Every single living cell in your body needs water in order to survive. So don't neglect your water intake - help your body to thrive!
